Amita Arudpragasam is an independent writer, researcher and policy analyst based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Her interests lie at the intersections of economics, politics, gender and ethnic conflict. She is currently producing a documentary on Climate Emergency in Sri Lanka’s North as a Pulitzer Center grantee.
Amita was a senior assistant editor at Himal Southasian magazine in 2020. She has written for magazines like The Caravan, Novara, and Foreign Policy and has provided political-economy analysis for the BBC, ABC, Vice, Vox and The Wire.
Previously Amita was the Chief of Staff to Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, the Head of Research and Policy at Sri Lanka’s Secretariat for Coordinating Reconciliation Mechanisms, and a media analyst at a Colombo-based think tank. In 2021, she founded an online language school that teaches Tamil to English speakers.
Amita completed her AB in English Literature at Princeton University in 2012 and her MPP at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in 2018.
